On 26 March 2007, Minister of Transport Jerzy Polaczek, during his visit on Motorway A1: Sośnica – Bełk, thrusted a first symbolic shovel into the earth over the construction site. The Minister also met with the management of the General Directorate for National Roads and Motorways (GDDKiA), Katowice Branch, and representatives of the contractor, J&P – Avax JSC. The Minister looked into the state of preparation for the investment on all the part of Motorway A1 in the Silesian Voivodship.The Contract for the construction of Motorway A1: Sośnica – Bełk (15.5km) was concluded on 22 January 2007. The implementation cost was estimated at € 213.5 mln, including 83% covered by Cohesion Fund. The implementation period is 24 months long.
The range of construction works mainly consists of 3 motorway junctions (Knurów, Dębieński, Bełk), 33 engineering buildings, 2 Travel Service Spots and 3 toll collection stations.
The construction project of Motorway A1: Sośnica – Gorzyczki, 48km long, by way of junction with Motorway A4 in Sośnica (Gliwice), meets a strategic objective, allowing for the easiest connection of the South Europe countries and East Poland regions with West Europe countries at the border crossing point with Germany in Zgorzelec and Olszyna, and with East Europe countries at the border crossing point with Ukraine in Korczowa. The construction of the Motorway A1 section will lead to cooperation between the regions and increase of its importance in the European integration, strengthening social and economic cohesion.
“Sośnica” junction in Gliwice is a connection of Motorways A1 and A4, what makes a decisive influence on growth and development of the voivodships in South Poland.
Motorway A1 is tremendously important in the development of the Polish road network, and is the biggest road project implemented by the Polish Government.
At the moment, intensive preparatory works are being held so as to finish all sections of Motorway A1 as soon as possible.
