On 20 May 2010 Undersecretary of State at the Ministry of Infrastructure Anna Wypych-Namiotko participated in European Maritime Day celebrated in Gijon (Spain). The event was attended by numerous representatives of the European Commission and the Council of the European Union, which is now presided by Spain. Viceminister A. Wypych-Namiotko also met with Prince of Asturias Felipe.
During the conference, to be a part of celebrating EDM 2010, the Viceminister presented a Polish view on the EU integrated maritime policy. She also invited all the participants to take part in the celebration of European Maritime Day 2011 in Gdańsk (Poland). It is a great success for Poland because such cities as Göteborg, Bremen, or Valletta tried to win the competition. The event will surely provide an opportunity to emphasize the relationship between the city and the sea, and promote Gdańsk in Europe.

European Maritime Day is celebrated on 20 May each year. For the first time, it was held in 2008, Brussels (Belgium), then in Rome, and this year in Gijon (Spain).
European Maritime Day is getting more and more important and popular. It attracts key politicians form Europe, stakeholders from the maritime sector, mariners, scientists and students. It is a unique occassion to highlight the area, in which the event takes place. The theme of EMD 2010 was “Innovation”. The event was perfectly successful. The world-level celebration proved that Gijon is a truly maritime city that knows how to reconcile maritime tradition with maritime industrial development and innovation.
