Brussels, 24 November 2011, the Transport, Telecommunications and Energy Council adopted in the first reading a regulation establishing an EU programme to further promote the development and the implementation of the EU's integrated maritime policy. The budget for the implementation of the programme in accordance with the relevant European objectives is EUR 40 million for the period 2011 to 2013.

On 17 November 2011, during its Strasbourg plenary sitting of 14-17 November 2011, the European Parliament held a debate on whether to further develop an Integrated Maritime Policy. MEPs adopted a draft legislative resolution on the proposal for a regulation of the European Parliament and of the Council establishing a Programme to support the further development of an Integrated Maritime Policy.
